IIT Bombay unforgettable experience \m/

As you all know that after 6th sem, Industrial Internship is compulsory. So I did Internship in IIT Bombay. This article is about my experience and also some of details about IITB internship under ekalavya, an Open Source initiative. IIT Bombay is providing internship in ekalavya scheme from last three years. This projects come under National Mission on Education through ICT and all projects are under Professor D. B. Phatak,CSE department. There were around 23 projects this year ranging from various areas Android, ActionScript  Research projects like optimizing Moodle, JMeter and mine was edX development which was a research project.
1) How to apply:
Every year various IIT’s and NIT’s create web portals for their interns’ intake requirement. Most of them require a good CGPA. IIT-Bombay portal for summer internship was open from January. This internship is open for both 2nd year and 3rd year students. Last date of application was 22nd February 2013. So if you are struggling to find a good internship up to this period you can give a shot to this! Selection team will select around 110 students depending upon the requirements and based on your performance in 10th, 12th, as well as CGPA of B.Tech. in February second week.
But this year IIT Bombay also introduced a new scheme for intake- Software Contribution Quota. I don’t know if this will be continued to next year but this year they used following procedure:
If you are not selected then you can register for Software contribution quota through which around 50 students can get opportunity to intern in IITB. But in this scheme you need to be very active and create quality codes with some creativity of software’s (activities) as specified by IITB. This year I participated and chose activities on the topic of Gravity. This activities were based on PIE(Physical Interactive Learning) framework which is used to create animations based on education activities and which are also cross platform. I will not go in the details of neither framework nor coding that I did. Based on your performance you may be selected in the luckiest 50 out of 500/600 registered for software contribution quota.

2)The Experience:
It was very awesome that you got chance to live in IIT campus. As it is well said that “IITians learn from outside world rather than inside.” They have all facilities that I can think of (and which were not there in DA :P) like Olympic size Swimming Pool, Tennis court, squash room, skating club, Unlimited food from Mess (which includes sweets in lunch or dinner which was also unlimited J) and many things which I didn’t came across. After living in IITB you will definitely not take auto rickshaw from DA to info as you would have walked at least 2-3 KM per day from lab to Mess. It was awesome experience to sit in Tum-Tum (small bus) running inside campus’s curvy, hilly roads.

For first time visitors of Mumbai, Marine Drive- queen’s necklace, Wankhede stadium with MI match, Siddhivinayak Temple, Juhu beach (can’t miss awesome pavbhaji, golas and awesome experience of playing in beach), Bandra(Bandstand, Bandra fort , Various food courts near hiranandani-powai and you can’t miss to go to Starbucks. Bandra-Worli Sea link),Neptune Magnet Mall where (whole day is less to roam around!), fashion street(only for girls!!) and last Essel World-Water Kingdom(place to go after getting stipend! :p),lonawala , Khandala, Matheran,etc…...

There will be various hurdles which you have to pass through and experience like screening test(compulsory!), weekly meetings and compulsory lab work hours(which you can bunk just like our labs!) ,etc. If you want to really want to take this internship then one simple advise is don’t take project mentored by “Nagesh karmali” otherwise you have to again use your SEN knowledge and many documentation work will be assigned to you if you are from second year and don’t know about SRS,SDD.

3) Benefits:
Awesome 8000/- stipend with Aakash tablet was given to all interns. But don’t miss any day(or I should say attendance) otherwise you will paid less depending on the weeks you have worked. If you want to go for M.Tech/Ph.d then this is the best opportunity to capture because in IIT you can talk with many M.Tech mentors who have cracked GATE and came to IITB.
Hope this article may help you and best of luck or

  1. Hi, your post was really useful as I have myself been selected in the Ekalavya Program via Software Contribution. I have been assigned to Nagesh Karmali and was a bit shocked to read that I may be assigned Documentation work for 2 months as I am from second year. While I found out that SRS is Report Making work(I guess involving Latex) what exactly is the SDD work ? Thanks !
